The images in this series are all portraits of individuals who are either close to and beloved by Annette, or interesting people whom she met through chance encounters while travelling. Each work attempts to portray how the narratives of individual lives are reflected in outer physicality – actions, postures, ways in which people move or hold themselves, clothing and adornment etc. There is also an emphasis on capturing the inherent loneliness in the individual – part of our life’s story as human beings. The earlier work in this collection were done in oils while the later work were done in pastel and conte with gouache on pre-activated ground. The pre-activated ground was usually a poster, a map, or an interesting piece of written or patterned paper which was allowed to show through the top layers of conte acting as a unifier throughout the image.
